The statue of Henry Stanley which overlooked Kinshasa in colonial times. It rests on a steamboat that belonged to the African International Association, a company publicly charged by Leopold with a philanthropic and ‘civilising’ mission that veiled its true purpose of annexing and exploiting natural resources. The statue was removed during the Mobutu period of Africanisation in the 1970s and dumped in a government transport lot in Kinshasa, September 2003, Leopold and Mobutu series 6 Photo Courtesy of Michael Stevenson Gallery, Cape Town07. Krugersdorp, South Africa – A poor white family receives food from the Salvation Army on December 25, 1996 in Krugersdorp, West of Johannesburg, South Africa. The Salvation Army gave out food and presents on Christmas day to these formerly priviledged families, previously protected by the old Apartheid regime. They now have to share the resources in the country with the black population since the democratic election in 199431. Andrew Esiebo
